Situated between the central mountain ridge and the Atlantic coast this park has a wide range in elevation; in fact the extinct volcano Barva (2906 meter) is lying within it.
In the lower parts in the rainforest some Guzmania species can be found. Here are illustrated G. sprucei, G. scherzeriana, G. nicaraguensis and also the epiphyticaly growing Pitcairnia brittoniana.
